There seem to be a multitude of definitions for Performance Management. Here are several of these definitions: â€Å"Performance management is a process by which managers and employees work together to plan, monitor and review an employee’s work objectives and overall contribution to the organization. More than just an annual performance review, performance management is the continuous process of setting objectives, assessing progress and providing on-going coaching and feedback to ensure that employees are meeting their objectives and career goals† (HR Resource Center, n.d.). â€Å"A process for establishing a shared understanding about what is to be achieved, and how it is to be achieved, and an approach to managing people that increases the probability of achieving success† (Tracey B. Weiss, 1997). â€Å"Performance management is an ongoing process of communication between a supervisor and an employee that occurs throughout the year, in support of accomplishing the strategic objectives of the organization. The communication process includes clarifying expectations, setting objectives, identifying goals, providing feedback, and reviewing results.† (UC Berkeley Human Resources, 2016) The common theme among the definitions refer to â€Å"continuous process†, â€Å"employees and managers working together towards a common goal† and providing feedback and coaching to employees on more than an annual basis.
